Work in Progress: Staring at the Sun

Staring at the Sun, acrylic on panel, 2009 (work in progress)

I started this painting today using a sketch for reference that I drew a few days ago. It took me about 5 hours to get it to this point. It's my first full painting in 2009 -- I've mostly been working on screen-prints for the past month.

I'm tired of winter and I intentionally used bright colors and sunny subject matter in this painting. Looking at it some more, it's not quite done. I have some touching-up to do and will probably add some more color to give stronger dimension to the hair. I'll decide once I get back in the studio later this week...

Photo Fridays: Records and Tapes

This is a close-up shot of my tape collection circa 2005. Most of the tapes were from mid 80's-early 90's. I shot some photos of the tapes right before I donated them to the Brown Elephant. A lot I have of these tapes on CD or mp3 anyway. Some I wouldn't listen to any more and others I just haven't gotten around to getting digitally.
I still have all my old records though. Vinyl sounds good and is too hard to give up.

Photo Fridays: Bird tank + Pencil tank

Bird tank, photograph, 2003

This was taken in the West Loop with the Hancock in the background. I think a cool use of the old watertanks is to paint murals on them that reflects the neighborhood or Chicago in general.

Pencil tank, photograph, 2008

This watertank is on top of an old pencil factory in Roscoe Village (I can see it from my studio). The tank is painted with pencils in homage to the building's original use. It's now all condos, of course. The building in the foreground is now vacant but used to be a wood-working facility.

In the Studio - Watertank screen-prints

I recently set up a screen-printing work area in my studio. I created about 15 screen-prints of a watertank to varying degrees of success. I used two techniques to create the design: stenciling and drawing fluid to get the effects and multiple layers of color. The shot above is of the prints drying on a rope I strung across the width of my space. A few close-ups are below...
