I shot this walking through the East Village on a trip to New York last week. This was a wall next to a community garden. A great life-like stenciled image of a bird is paired with a more raw graffiti style painting of a bee.
This was taken on a Saturday afternoon stroll with my wife and old friend Rafael through Harlem. The main drag of 125th Street is filled with street vendors and an assortment of shops. This shot was taken not far from the Apollo Theater from what I remember. Click on the image to see a larger version - check out the woman in the middle -- screaming!
My wife and I were walking back to the subway after a jazz show heading for a late dinner. When we came across this sign, we weren't sure what to do!
Note: My weekly "Saturday Shots" now replaces "Photo Fridays". It's much easier to post regularly on the weekend...

This new painting, started and finished in one session, is part of my portraits series. I was aiming for a more sculpted, realistic effect while trying to keep the brush strokes loose -- giving the painting a more sketch-like, expressionistic quality.

This new painting is based on a 1975 photograph just after I turned 4 years old. For some reason though, the disco shirt and the way I painted it makes me look like a teenager. It started off as more of a mixed media piece but ended up as a fully-formed painting. The birds were created from a screen-print image that I've been using in some other recent works.
I was trying to capture that sunny, free, 1970's childhood feeling with this painting. A time when parents didn't have to worry about kids playing outside by themselves. A time when strip malls didn't dominate the suburban landscape. A time before tainted water was served up to residents of my hometown.
Here's the original wallet-sized photograph this painting is based on:

This photo is part of my Old Signage series. Taken on a quiet night in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, it's a reminder for this weekend: get a haircut!
